Let me introduce Kim to you, the math teacher turned incredible handmade artist! She creates the most wonderful flowers made from wood, and we are ecstatic that she plans to join us at Handmade! Keep reading to learn more about these incredible flowers and the just as incredible artist behind them.
Kim, please introduce yourself!
My name is Kim Volk, and I am The Crafty Mathematician! I have been married to an incredible guy, Patrick, for 10 years in May and although I don’t have any children, I have two adorable Boston Terriers (Rocky & Adrian). I love working with wood flowers, but I also love mathematics!
I am the AP Calculus teacher at Bountiful High School, where I have been teaching for 28 years.
What do you love most about what you create?
I love working with wood flowers because there are so many things I can create with them and a lot of people have not seen them before. I love that they last forever and you don’t have to do anything to take care of them.
A lot of brides like to use them because they can be dyed any color and they look real! I also love that the wood flowers are made from the root of a tapioca plant only grown in tropical regions (like India and Thailand)!
Who’s your biggest fan?
My husband, Patrick, is my biggest fan and the most supportive husband ever! He is actually the one that encouraged me to start working with wood flowers and has continued doing so for almost two years now.
He makes a lot of the wood products I use with my creations and is always looking for new things for me to try. We recently purchased an air paint sprayer to try on the wood flowers, and he surprised me with a heat press a year ago when I expressed some interest in trying one out.
When you need musical inspiration, who do you turn the volume up for?
My absolute favorite artist is P!nk, but I really like all types of music and have quite a variety of music to listen to. Recently, I saw “Bohemian Rhapsody” and have become obsessed with Queen! There are a lot of songs I didn’t even know they sang.
What is your favorite item that you sell and why?
I really don’t have one item that I love the most, but I do have one that I created for a friend that is memorable and special to me. Her grandfather had just passed away and she wanted me to make something unique to give to her grandmother that she could keep forever.
The flowers were dyed her grandmother’s favorite colors, and then I added little trinkets that represented significant events in his life–trinkets like an airplane because he was a pilot, a movie reel because he was part of a TV show, and a musical note because he played an instrument.
She sent me a picture of her grandmother with the bouquet box and it really meant a lot to me (in fact I’m getting a little teared up writing this). 🙂
